10 – Okami
Combining Japanese myth, legend and folklore to tell the story of how the land was saved from darkness by the Shinto sun goddess, who has taken the form of a white wolf. The cel-shaded visual style looked fantastic on the PS2 and deserved to have been played more.
9 – Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
The reboot of the series saw the unnamed prince return to form and with some very entertaining platforming and action sequences it is definitely worth a play. Using the key game mechanic Dagger to rewind time is very well used throughout the game.
8 – Soul Calibur 2
Originally released in the arcades and then ported over to the Playstation 2 is easily one of the best fighting games on the console. The story mode in the game doesn’t really add anything but that doesn’t matter as it is such a good fighting game.
7 – Bully
An open world game made by Rockstar will always be entertaining but this one surprised everyone as it was set in a school and focused on the loves of schoolchildren. Obviously there was controversy surrounding the game but it gained positive reviews because of its narrative and characters.
6 – Shadow of the Colossus
With no other enemies than the 16 colossi, it is a different game to most and it could even be argued that it is more of a puzzle game than an action adventure game. One of the first games that can connect with you emotionally.
5 – Silent Hill 2
Possibly the best survival horror game ever that has a lot of genuine scares. It creates such a fantastic atmosphere and has an equally good story. The psychological horror the game uses has not been matched and will live long with the player after completing it.
4 – Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil games may have taken a turn for the worse but at one point they were some of the most anticipated games of the year. The fourth instalment is probably the best of the series even though it took a different route from previous games.
3 – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Such a tough choice to decide which is the best GTA game but San Andreas had fantastic voice acting and is one of the best games of all time which is a testament to the rest of the series that it’s a difficult decision.
2 – God of War 2
The second instalment built on everything the first one did well but made it bigger and better. Following the story of Kratos as he goes through ancient Greece with vengeance in his heart. Now it has been remastered nobody should miss out on this one.
1 – Metal Gear Solid 3
After the surprising Metal Gear Solid 2 which left some fans angry, Kojima turned it round and created one of the greatest games ever made with one of the best stories told in video games. Certainly different from the rest of the series but amazing.
